Electrochemical sensing of breast cancer metabolic biomarkers in urine: A collaboration between IIT Mandi and Åbo Akademi University (ÅAU)

The project Electrochemical Sensing of Breast Cancer Metabolic Biomarkers in Urine is a collaboration between the School of Basic Sciences-IIT Mandi, and the Laboratory of Molecular Science and Engineering- ÅAU. The objective of the project is to detect the presence of homovanillic acid (HVA), a breast-cancer metabolic biomarker, in solution using a MoS2-based sensor.

The project Electrochemical Sensing of Breast Cancer Metabolic Biomarkers in Urine is being led by Professor Jaiswal (IIT Mandi) and Professor Huynh (ÅAU). The research teams aim to monitor changes in the concentration of HVA and other related biomarkers in order to diagnose breast cancer at an early stage.

During the year 2021, both groups explored applications of 2D materials namely the transition metal dichalcogenide (Molybdenum disulfide; MoS2). The preliminary data showed that MoS2 is able to respond to one of the breast-cancer metabolic biomarkers. The research teams came up with an innovative approach for the quick coating of MoS2 solutions on electrodes following solvent evaporation to obtain the final MoS2-based chemosensors. Using differential pulse voltammetry, the electrochemical detection of HVA, a cancer biomarker, reaches as low as a few micromolar in the presence of common interferents in urine. The results of the project is published in the Nano Futures journal (manuscript doi: https://doi.org/10.1088/2399-1984/ac8215).

Electrochemical Sensing of Breast Cancer Metabolic Biomarkers in Urineis seed-funded as part of the India Pilot initiative from the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture. Aalto is coordinating the India Pilot Network FICORE (Finnish Indian Consortia for Research and Education) which involves 38  higher education institutions from Finland and India.
