Synthesis of novel biobased and biodegradable polymers from biobased resources for value-added application
The project Synthesis of Novel Biobased and Biodegradable Polymers from Biobased Resources for Value-added Applications is being developed by Professor Rama Layek, Department of Separation Science-LUT University, and Professor Pralay Maiti, School of Materials Science and Technology-IIT BHU. The research team intends to develop lignocellulose or polysaccharide-based novel biopolymers and biobased resins from various types of biobased resources such as lignocellulose-derived biopolymers, cellulose derivatives, nanocellulose hemicellulose, and lignin. The results will also develop polysaccharide derivatives for biomedical and/or engineering wood product applications. The research team at LUT has synthesized the biopolyurethane (shown in the figure) from biobased resources and the bio-medical applications are being developed and tested by the research team at IIT BHU.
The research collaboration has developed a biobased composite resin for engineering wood products and the results are published in “Industrial Crops and Products” (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.indcrop.2022.115299 ).
Collaboration of LUT University with IIT BHU on the Synthesis of Novel Biobased and Biodegradable Polymers from Biobased Resources for Value-added Applications is seed-funded as part of the India Pilot initiative from the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture. Aalto is coordinating the India Pilot Network FICORE (Finnish Indian Consortia for Research and Education) which involves 38 higher education institutions from Finland and India.
